How To Keep Your Family Healthy

By Chris Scarborough

In the US today, many families don't follow a regular exercise program, making obesity one of the biggest problems. It is often said that the family that plays together, stays together. In the case of family fitness, this saying is true. Encouraging your family to get moving and getting them off the sofa is a simple task.

Pay attention to what everyone in the family likes to do. If you notice your husband and your sons are into football, then try suggesting going to the park and playing flag football. Head to the trails if your daughter is an avid jogger. You can try getting dance pad games to help in the weight loss process if your kids prefer video games than outdoor playing. This brings a whole new meaning to playing video games, and can actually be fun for you too. It's play, not exercise.

Your family's fitness not only means exercise, but a change in the kitchen as well. Replacing chips and cookies with healthier alternative choices is an important step. Snacks such as carrot and celery sticks, apples, seedless grapes, pretzels, air popped popcorn, and graham crackers make excellent choices. If available, your children will grab these snacks without a second thought. Fill your cabinets with these healthier snacks and you might find yourself surprised that your family doesn't even notice the difference! Bottled water and fruit juices replacing sodas will also be helpful to your cause. Diet sodas are loaded with sodium so they're not good for you as well.

If you include subtle changes in the eating habits of your family, the effects can be long lasting. It is never too late to make a healthy change for you and your family. Just remember to be discreet. Your children might not accept it if you tell them you're making changes.

It's important to take care of your family and one way to do it is family fitness. Your kids will follow your example. If you follow a steady, healthy pattern, your children are just as likely to continue this pattern once they are on their own. Just don't forget to make the habit fun! If you want everyone to be more accepting of the changes, then they should be fun.
