Fight the Signs of Aging with Botox

By Nia Lawrence

What comes to your mind when you hear the words Botox Sydney? Aside from the well-known treatment for facial wrinkles and age lines on the forehead, this term is actually the brand name for dermal fillers. Now if the term still sounds uncannily familiar, it's probably because it's derived from botulism, which is a condition of the stomach after consuming bad oysters. Actually, a bacterial strain, clostridium botulinum, produces toxins from which the dermal filler is taken. If taken in large amounts, lethal muscle paralysis may occur; nevertheless, the substance may be diluted to relax wrinkled and tensed muscles. This substance, the Botox, causes instantaneous and lasting benefits since it's directly injected into problem areas.

Muscle relaxants (which is the more common term for Botox) are used to treat several muscular ailments like blepharospasm or excessive blinking and strabismus or drooping eyelids. Nevertheless, the cosmetic benefits of Botox have grown in popularity especially after the FDA gave its approval for its treatment of laugh and frown lines. Nowadays, skin doctors produce different compositions of Botox so they can solve the problem of wrinkles and fine lines. The substance prevents signals from the nerves that tell the muscles to contract from being transmitted. Hence, wrinkles and fine lines become smoothed when the facial muscles relax. Nonetheless, you need to recognize that the substance is effective as long as it's only treating wrinkles due to muscle contractions. The substance does not correct skin problems caused by overexposure to the sun.

Botox Sydney is a no-fuss treatment, which lasts a short time only and has minor side effects. The entire process of injecting the Botox onto the face takes a few minutes only. Anesthesia is no longer needed since the treatment is non-invasive. A fine needle will be used to inject the substance into the muscles. At first, all you'll feel is a tingling sensation around the injected area. However, as the toxin penetrates the muscles, you'd start feeling the effects. This usually occurs within three to seven days after the first session. You can enjoy its effects for the next six months, but when the toxin wears off, your muscles will slowly contract and wrinkle again. This is why follow-up treatments are necessary to make your facial muscles more familiar with their relaxed state.

You'll make the most out of the benefits of the treatment if you mind the treatment's precautions (especially the contraindications). Avoid alcohol intake a week before the procedure, and make sure you've stopped taking aspirin and NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) a couple of weeks beforehand. Bruising, headaches, and eyelid dropping are common side effects, but these settle down as the muscles adapt to the toxin's concentration.

Before you consider getting Botox, it would be a good idea to consult your doctor first. Going for the treatment without professional supervision might endanger your overall health. Opt out of Botox parties if you're leery of the technician's credentials, and you're uncertain of its effects on your body.
